We connected with missionary John Bean last year, and he is seeing a great turning to God among the Roma/gypsies in this nation (and in the rest of Europe also). It turns out that the missions trip we have set up with him will be only about 25 miles away from Poprad, the city my grandfather left in 1907 to come to America. I will be visiting the Slovak church also.

This will be a sort of "experiencing my roots" trip! This summer we went to Handel's house in London, which has been made into a museum, the Handel House. It was here that he wrote his greatest works, including Messiah. It is in the center of the city, in Mayfair, and worth a visit if you are in London. Some interesting facts about Handel which we learned there:

1. Handel was a bachelor all his life.

2. Jimi Hendrix, the famous American rock guitarist, lived in the same house, which is a little weird. He hosted big parties there with famous rockers and lots of drugs. A whole room in the house is devoted to him.

3. Handel was something of a childhood prodigy. When he was a child his dad took him along to visit a family friend who was a Duke. Handel was put on a piano stool and began playing on his own, awed everyone, and the Duke convinced his dad to get him musical lessons since he obviously had talent.

4. The writer of the words of Messiah was very disappointed with what Handel wrote (see the quote above). Charles Jennens said "I shall put no more sacred words into his hands to be thus abused". Of course, today everyone has heard of Handel and few remember Charles Jennens.

I was in a famous discount variety store, and as I walked through the kitchenware section (on my way elsewhere) a picture of these great snack and desert bowls we used to have flashed into my mind. We had a bunch of these given to us at our wedding, and all but one broke five years ago when a kitchen shelf collapsed and most things on it were smashed (it was quite dramatic!). I have looked for them ever since, but with no luck.

But when I walked ten feet further, there were two of them just sitting there on the shelf. I scooped them up, and gave glory to God. God can lead you shopping after all! Was this a word of knowledge?Pastor Ken Jaskohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17490437239775552731noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1970861285320829199.post-31026452841807588042013-10-01T09:00:00.001-07:002013-10-01T09:00:39.573-07:00Favorite thing in LondonSeveral people have asked me about what I liked best on our trip to London and its surroundings. Kew Gardens, Stonehenge, and the British Museum were all most impressive. But my favorite will surprise you.

The British Library has a room of historic books and writings of all sorts (Gutenberg Bible, Beatles original songs, Shakespeare's plays, etc.) But the most valuable is the Codex Sinaiticus. This is a 4th century manuscript of the Bible, one of the two oldest, most famous, and original in the world (Codex Vaticanus is in Rome). The story of its discovery is worthy of an Indiana Jones movie (check out the story on wikipedia). But it was an amazing experience to be inches away (it is is an alarmed glass case) from maybe the oldest copy of the Bible in the world. I stood in front of it and just gazed at it for a long time. It is written in capital Greek letters, mostly without word breaks, just continuous letters. I was able to read a few words from it.
God used our first visit to Israel to provoke me to think more about them. The site where Jesus spoke them is absolutely beautiful, a naatural amphitheater on the side of a mountain sloping down into the Sea of Galilee. They deal with the character of a believer, and the characteristics that we need in our lives to have God's blessing present. If there is anything we need in this day, it is godly character.
I saw it last night, and much of the story turns around how Superman related to his Krypton father, and also his earthly father. Both are great examples, and teach and sacrifice their lives for him. One even keeps guiding him after his death through technology (you have to see it, no more details) . Superman struggles with his identity, and becomes the best of both great examples. (I am not even going into a theological truth that Superman is presented as an excellent Christ-figure by the movie, which was planned by the director.) But this movie is worth seeing for its depiction of fatherhood. The action sequences and scifi were good too!Pastor Ken Jaskohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17490437239775552731noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1970861285320829199.post-58201562655751469972013-05-17T14:36:00.002-07:002013-05-17T14:36:40.748-07:00Odd spiritual experience at the mallThis morning I continued my 2 year old adventure of prayer walking Freehold. I was at the Raceway Mall, having covered almost all of the town north of that area. Today I walked the ring road around the mall, which is surprisingly huge. As I was near the spoke at the corner leading to the movie theater off Rt. 537, the Holy Spirit came on me, and I saw the mall in a different light, a supernatural way (this is hard to put into words). I felt God urging me to ask the Holy Spirit and His presence to fall on the mall and all those in it. I believe this happened, and some unusual things will result from this in the future. The experience was exhilirating.Pastor Ken Jaskohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17490437239775552731noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1970861285320829199.post-17640199737132226612013-04-05T10:29:00.002-07:002013-04-05T10:29:54.483-07:00Uncle Tom's CabinI have been trying to read some classics lately, and just finished "Uncle Tom's Cabin". This book is truly great in that it was written by a strong Christian with a very strong Christian message and goal, at a time when almost the whole audience of Americans saw themselves as Christians. It also had a huge impact in ending slavery by showing how it worked in daily life. What touched me most, though, was how the slaves, especially Tom, dealt with suffering as Christians. Their comments are moving and timeless.

This is a great book for you to read some time.Pastor Ken Jaskohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17490437239775552731noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1970861285320829199.post-42764338571932214762013-04-05T10:17:00.000-07:002013-04-05T10:17:41.821-07:00Easter attendanceSeveral people have asked me how many people were here on Easter Sunday, seeing the large crowd spread over three services. Our total was 1151, a new record for a Sunday morning. God has really been blessing the church lately, with many new faces from all over. I attribute much of this to our 21 days of prayer and fasting starting the year. God spoke to me a few years ago that the church would one day have 2500 people in attendance, but I am not sure when. But there are many others who need Christ in the area, keep praying and working. We may need the next phase of the building plan sooner than we thought.Pastor Ken Jaskohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17490437239775552731noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1970861285320829199.post-19431597048991689112013-02-09T12:24:00.001-08:002013-02-09T12:24:48.047-08:00New ask the pastor question"Does God want us to be happy?"Pastor Ken Jaskohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17490437239775552731noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1970861285320829199.post-57706915532689627542013-02-09T11:44:00.003-08:002013-02-09T11:44:57.951-08:00Jury dutyFor the third time in my life, I was called this week for jury duty. Five years ago I was called for 3 days, but did not serve (I was bumped off a trial by the attorney when he found out I was a pastor!). About 15 years ago I served on grand jury for 3 or 4 months every Wed. This was interesting, we would hear 10-15 cases a day to determine if there was evidence to go to trial. I gained a lifetime of stories and sermon illurtations, but since it is confidential, I can't share any of them.

So guess what happened this time? I was "on call" for 3 days, but did not even need to go to the courthouse. I had lots of ministry work to do, so I feel like I dodged a bullet!Pastor Ken Jaskohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17490437239775552731noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1970861285320829199.post-12905546135548319292013-02-09T11:21:00.003-08:002013-02-09T11:21:33.247-08:00Prayer for neighborsI was greatly encouraged to keep praying for our church neighbors by something that happened last week. I went out to lunch 40 minutes away at a business in Cranbury with someone new to church. At lunch he said, "Did you notice the lady at the first desk on the right as you came in?' I said yes. Dave told me that she lives right across from the church, she sees the church out her window. This is right off my adopted street of Witherspoon. I said I would like to meet her when we returned to the office.

Dave introduced me as the pastor of MWC. She told me, "I live right across from it!" I told her she should stop by and visit some time. She said that she and a neighbor friend have been thinking of it! I will be inviting them for Easter, the drama, Vanderblast ,etc.

God is hearing our prayers, keep asking. It amazes me to think that God brought a Christian to her workplace over half an hour away in answer to our prayers.Pastor Ken Jaskohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17490437239775552731noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1970861285320829199.post-5912007986491773932013-01-17T13:10:00.001-08:002013-01-17T13:10:30.283-08:00Mountain climbing dreamHere's a dream from early Sunday morning that I think was prophetic. I was climbing a huge mountain with another local pastor I have not seen in several years. We reached the top, and spread out below it was a beautiful long valley half full of bright gold mixed with dirt. Past that valley were several others, also full of gold and dirt. Somehow I felt that since we had discovered this, the valley contents belonged to us.

What does it mean? Someone said that the gold represents souls. I like that better than real gold, which is not bad either! In any case, it is a good dream.

Any thoughts on what this means?Pastor Ken Jaskohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17490437239775552731noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1970861285320829199.post-47903112705587038652012-12-30T15:04:00.000-08:002012-12-30T15:04:11.406-08:00Trip to BrooklynAll my Brooklyn friends should be proud of me for venturing into the heart of Brooklyn this week. We had to get Christina to LaGuardia airport in the morning, and were looking for places to hang out for the day before seeing "Elf" that night (a lot of fun, with several good moral messages). After looking around, we chose the Brooklyn Museum of Art, only about a half hour drive from the airport. This is a beautiful museum, newly renovated and spacious. It has a great and large Egypt collection of artifacts, which have always fascinated me, since they are just about the oldest civilization in the world (thousands of years older than Israel, which is itself incredibly old). We spent an enjoyable 5 hours there without even seeing everything. And it is not half as crowded as any of the famous Manhattan museums.Pastor Ken Jaskohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17490437239775552731noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1970861285320829199.post-33960065507029483662012-12-30T14:56:00.001-08:002012-12-30T14:56:50.510-08:00Bible readingEach year I read through the Bible on the church reading plan, along with all the notes and annotations of a different version. I have been through the Dake's Bible, John Maxwell Leadership Bible, Message, Cottonpatch Bible, and various other Bibles this way. But the Archaeological Bible this past year was by far the best one I have read through. I originally picked it up in preparation for the trip to Israel, but was enthralled by its history and description of places and customs. It is really good, and has pictures of most of the famous places we saw. If anyone wants to borrow it, let me know, it is that enriching.
Last week I traveled with a group of 18 NJ ministers to Haiti. We were sponsored by the Convoy of Hope ministry, which does incredible relief and emergency work throughout the world . We visited schools, orphanages, a Bible school, churches and a huge warehouse full of relief food and supplies. The country has rebounded some from the 2010 earthquake, but still needs lots of help. We met many Christian and secular groups helping out. Most churches have grown dramatically since the quake. We took a team there in 2010 six months after the quake. Maybe we will go back!
How it happened was unusual.

In church I asked who still did not have electricity in both services, and was surprised to find out that we were the only ones left powerless in the whole church (over 800 people present that Sunday). Various people prayed for us after hearing this. Right after this a man came in from Pittsburgh who said he was working on lines in the area. He asked if the church was fully on. Someone directed him to my wife Louise. She said "yes, but I wish someone would get our home back on- line." He asked where we lived, and wrote it down. He said he would get someone to work on it.

When church was over, I called home, and was shocked to find electricity was back on (the answering machine worked).

Could he have been an angel of power?Pastor Ken Jaskohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17490437239775552731noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1970861285320829199.post-16199183064626823742012-11-09T14:08:00.000-08:002012-11-09T14:08:10.453-08:00Election namesI read the other day about twins born on Election Day. The parents named them Mitt Romney and Barack Obama (plus the last name)!
I feel sorry for these kids in a few years when they have to explain this.Pastor Ken Jaskohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17490437239775552731noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1970861285320829199.post-17717805013769057542012-11-09T14:05:00.000-08:002012-11-09T14:05:03.823-08:00Hurricane Sandy lamentToday is day 11 of our exile as refugees from Hurricane Sandy. It is getting old, but several wonderful people have given us shelter. Our power has not been on at all since the hurricane. Some in my area had power for a few days and then lost it again after the surprise snow storm of 2 days ago (13 inches fell in Freehold, the highest amount in the noreaster) when many trees and more power lines fell. We have been in 4 different locations since this started, since our house got pretty cold. My wife was pretty sick when the storm started. My cell phone did not work for the first several days usually. But I think I missed the internet, email and news even more than heat and electric. On one call, the power company told us that our entire street was listed as having electricity (6 houses around us are powerless) when we were in the dark.

We had church in the dark last Sunday, which actually was kind of cozy and fun (as a one-time experience). We got power back after 8 days and then lost it after the storm for a day. And during this we lost water for 3 days as a bonus. Today it is all back on. I feel like a king in the office with power and water!

We go daily to our house to pick up clothes and other things and to feed our cat, who almost attacks us demanding food and affection ("where have you been?", she says).

I have joked that our goal is to be the last home in Manalapan holding out without power (they say only about 10% are left now). But seriously, we would like to get power back soon. This part of NJ is a mess.Pastor Ken Jaskohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17490437239775552731noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1970861285320829199.post-4758422803438685912012-10-29T06:09:00.002-07:002012-10-29T06:09:37.305-07:00The stormYesterday morning I started to think about what the spiritual significance of Hurricane Sandy is. Remember, every event in the physical realm is a manifestation of what is happening in the spiritual realm. So I asked God what this meant. To my surprise, I got an instant answer as the Holy Spirit spoke to me. In my mind I saw the weather map of the storm superimposed on the US map, with the storm stretching out to the Mississippi River. God said, "This storm is just a portent, a small shadowing of what will happen to America if there is not repentance. Everything will be shaken, and many things will be destroyed." I was also suddenly aware that the storm will hit the Bos-Wash corridor, the beginning of the nation and still its power center. I became aware that this is hitting right before Election Day as a warning.

Regardless of what happens in the election, we need revival, or very dark times are ahead.Pastor Ken Jaskohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17490437239775552731noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1970861285320829199.post-63526476576718524402012-10-10T13:49:00.001-07:002012-10-10T13:49:13.032-07:00VisionRecently I had a vision of the future of monmouth Worship Center. I saw something/someone being raised up from this church that will have a major impact upon the nation. It will start here. This will happen after I am no longer leading the church.

Curious what/who it will be.Pastor Ken Jaskohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17490437239775552731noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1970861285320829199.post-15152194377845393172012-10-10T13:46:00.004-07:002012-10-10T13:46:36.945-07:00Unexpected questions of JesusAs I have looked at the questions of Jesus, I am shocked by how frustrated he got with the disciples often. Consider the following questions of Jesus-

"How much longer do I have to put up with you?"
"Could you not even pray with me for an hour?"
"Does this offend you?"
"Are you still sleeping?"
"Are you willing to suffer for me?"
"Why do you worry so much?"
"Why is it that you have so little faith?"

Though as a pastor I have felt like these sometimes, I won't be preaching on any of these!Pastor Ken Jaskohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17490437239775552731noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1970861285320829199.post-46971322819043636692012-09-20T14:11:00.002-07:002012-10-13T13:22:05.674-07:00A wedding to rememberSaturday I officiated at a wedding at a local catering facility. After, I walked inside to a cocktail hour, where they had a buffet of great snacks before the dinner. Their buffalo chicken with blue cheese sauce was the best I have ever tasted- incredible. So I went back for seconds. Then I saw 3 adult men with yamulkes. Looking around, I realized that none of the people were from the wedding seemed present. Wondering, I walked over to a sign on the wall- "Welcome to Justin's bar-mitzvah"! I had been unknowingly crashing a bar-mitvah.

The spiritual lesson-it is easy to find yourself in the wrong place.

But the bar-mitzvah had great food.Pastor Ken Jaskohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17490437239775552731noreply@blogger.com0
